Cystic acne is the result of more than just oily skin.
Cystic acne is caused by:
- Overactive oil glands
- Excess dead skin cells within the pores
- A large number of acne-causing bacteria
These same factors are the cause of other forms of acne. However, with cystic acne, when the pores become clogged with bacteria, the cycle does not stop at a pimple. Instead, the pimple goes on to form a deep-rooted, painful cyst.
Another cause of cystic acne is hormonal changes, which occur in adult women during pregnancy. Pregnant women may experience a hormonal imbalance, which results in overactive oil glads that cause acne.
There are other explanations to why someone may have cystic acne, such as heredity. If your parents had cystic acne, then there is a good chance you may experience it as well.
